Hello Interwebs! As you can tell by the title, this blog is going to be sort of an info dump for things related to Wilderness backpacking and adventure - and doing so on the cheap!
I decided to start this blog after all my backpacking gear was stolen off my front porch (don't ask). Thinking it was time for some new gear anyways, I hit the 'usual sites' and started looking around for new gear that wouldn't break the bank (I'm only 23, and well, I'm always pretty broke).
I was surprised at what I found. It would cost me around $500 to replace all the gear I lost, and that was after spending hours navigating around different websites, looking through their closeout/clearance sections, looking at "last season's" products, open box and returned items...it wasn't pretty.
What's worse is that in the world of backcountry travel, $500 for a complete gear setup is CHEAP! I routinely found individual backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, and everything else under the sun in the $3-500 price range. Incredible.
So I decided to fire up this blog - Lots of people (like me!) who want to hit the trail for a week(end) simply don't have the luxury of blowing $100 on a stove that also doubles as a french press/fax/washer/dryer combo. Besides that, for someone just starting out, that kind of money is a pretty steep (read: ridiculous) investment to get started in a sport that they aren't sure if they're going to like or not.
Hopefully, this blog will serve both crowds (and hopefully many more, as well). I plan on posting helpful tips not only on how to get outdoors without maxing out a credit card or blowing through your kids college fund, but how to have fun and stay comfortable doing it.
